The Reddish Rebels Bsketball Club have just returned from a Basketball
tournament in Belgium that was made possible by a donation from Awards for All
and money raised by club members throughout the year through various events.
The tournament took place on 23rd and 24th Aug and a total of 32 countries
entered the competition.
We entered an U19's girls team, an U18's boys team and a senior mens team. The
teams consisted of members from the Reddish Rebels Club with additions of
players from other local clubs, a total of 48 people travelled by coach to
Ghent in Belgium.
There was a high standard of basketball throughout the tournament and the Mens
team and the Boys team found it tough, but they battled on with determination
and enjoyed every minute on court. They did not score high in the tables but
they made lots of friends along the way.
The Mens team have already been invited to Ireland on Oct 4th, by the
'Torpedoes' who they met in Belgium, to take part in their tournament,
everyone is up for it.
The Girls team were spectacular, they won all their matches on the first day
and on the second day which put them into the final against America, they lost
to AmerIca by 22 points. What a result.
We never expected to win anything when we decided to enter the tournament, it
was meant to give them experience of travel, other cultures and show them what
is available to them through sport.
We came away from Belgium with the runners up trophy and we still can't believe
it.
It is absolutly amazing to think how much talent has come out of such a small
community.
We are so proud of each and everyone on them, they are all winners in our eyes.
We are already planning next years event, not sure where it will take us but
its sure to be another success.
